5 websites where Canadians can order sustainable seafood online

Wondering where you can find quality, sustainable seafood in Canada? I've got you covered.

Canada has the longest coastline in the world. Three oceans, the Great Lakes, and more freshwater than any other country on the planet. And yet the average Canadian eats about 19 pounds of seafood a year — barely a portion a week.

That number should be higher. Seafood is the healthiest, most affordable, and most environmentally friendly source of protein on the planet, and we're sitting on more of it than almost anyone. We should absolutely be eating more of it.

I also get why we don't. Seafood can feel confusing, intimidating, and hard to find — especially if you're nowhere near a coast. But that's changed. Over the last few years, a wave of Canadian fishers, farmers, and small seafood businesses have started shipping direct, bringing high-quality, sustainable seafood right to your door.

A few clicks, and there's sockeye salmon, spot prawns, halibut, trout, Arctic char, and so much more on its way to your kitchen.

Here are five places where Canadians can order sustainable seafood online:

Caudle's Catch

"From farm-raised to wild caught, Caudle's Catch offer peace of mind with the largest selection of fresh oysters, PEI mussels and the best Canadian fresh lobster this side of Nova Scotia on a growing list of consciously purchased seafood to help your next dining adventure be unforgettable."

Caudle's Catch is a retail fish market that's been operating in the KW-Region since 1986.

They import seafood products from around the world, but the east coast of Canada remains the most popular place for Caudle's Catch to source seafood from. Favourites include Atlantic Salmon, Cod, Haddock, Oysters, Mussels, and Lobster. From the Great Lakes, Caudle's brings in Pickerel, Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch and Whitefish fillets.

Caudle's Catch is a partner of the popular Ocean Wise program that ensures transparency in seafood supply chains and certifies seafood products as "sustainably harvested" based on scientific data. Their team is also incredibly knowledgable and passionate about seafood sustainability.

They have a 3,000 square foot superstore based in Kitchener, as well as other locations at Vincenzo's in Waterloo, the Victoria St Market, the Cambridge Market as well as the St. Jacobs and Kitchener Markets.

You can also purchase online and pick up your order at their Kitchener superstore or have it delivered straight to your door. Caudle's offers expedited delivery to customers all across Canada, including next-day delivery for customers within the Waterloo Region and Guelph.

Seafood Naturally (previously Organic Ocean)

Organic Ocean built its name supplying wild, sustainably harvested seafood to top restaurants across Canada. When the pandemic shut dining rooms down in 2020, they pivoted to shipping direct to home cooks — and never looked back. That consumer side now has its own name: Seafood Naturally. Organic Ocean continues as the parent company and the brand chefs and wholesale buyers know; Seafood Naturally is the online store for the rest of us. Same fishers, same standards, clearer name.

Everything they sell is sustainably harvested or responsibly farmed, primarily in BC — sockeye, halibut, sablefish, lingcod, spot prawns, Dungeness crab, Haidacore™ albacore — plus a few standouts from further afield like Pangnirtung turbot from Nunavut and Hokkaido scallops. They were the first seafood company in the world to DNA-test their products for authenticity, and they're a certified B Corp.

The old curated boxes have been replaced by a fully à la carte shop, with most items sold as 6oz portions (halibut from about $26, sockeye from about $18, sablefish from about $16). If you cook fish regularly, their Standing Order program knocks up to 10% off for recurring deliveries. Their Chef Tips series — written with the restaurant chefs they supply — is still there to help you cook it properly.

Seafood Naturally ships across Canada with next-day delivery, and orders over a set threshold ship free.

Skipper Otto

Skipper Otto is a community supported fishery based out of Vancouver, BC.

They operate on a membership-basis, in which consumers purchase a membership at the beginning of the fishing season to secure their share of the catch. The minimum share consumers can buy is $200 CAD, with the option to top up or rollover small unused amounts later.

This model has become increasingly popular in the last decade (and is actually the focus of my graduate research!) because it provides financial stability for fishermen when consumers accept a portion of responsibility in the food system.

Once you've purchased a membership, you gain access to Skipper Otto's "dock" where you can find a ton of recipes and "meet" the fishermen who caught your fish by reading their stories online. Skipper Otto promotes eating with the ecosystem, so their storefront is updated periodically in alignment with the local fishing seasons. Once the fishermen return, the catch is updated online and you can pick and choose which products you'd like to purchase using your account credits. Skipper Otto ships across Canada to more than 80 pickup points. They also offer home delivery in certain cities within British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec.

One of the main reasons that I love Skipper Otto is because I know that I'm not only getting a high-quality, sustainable seafood product for my money, but I'm also directly supporting the BC fishing families who caught my fish for me.

Larry's Catch

"Wild Caught. Sustainable. 100% Canadian."

Larry's Catch is proof that you don't have to live on the coast to eat like you do.

The company was founded by Glen Creaser, who moved from Nova Scotia to Ontario in 2016 and was struck by how hard it was to find good, honest seafood inland. Most of what he found in grocery stores was farmed, fed antibiotics, and sourced from who-knows-where — so he set out to bring premium Canadian seafood straight to people's doors instead. (His family has been fishing the waters off Nova Scotia since the 1800s, so this is very much in his blood.)

Everything Larry's Catch sells is wild-caught and 100% Canadian. They work directly with hand-picked fishing families and MSC-certified suppliers who follow strict regulations to protect marine ecosystems, and their partnerships help sustain rural fishing communities and the generational jobs that come with them. The seafood is flash-frozen right on the boat (or shortly after landing) to lock in freshness and nutrition — no preservatives required — and it keeps in your freezer for up to six months.

You'll find everything from Atlantic lobster and wild sockeye salmon to scallops, halibut, black cod, haddock, shrimp, crab, and smoked salmon. You can build your own custom box with no minimums, or let their team put together one of their curated seasonal boxes — both available as a one-time order or an auto-ship subscription. It arrives fresh-frozen in insulated boxes packed with dry ice, and shipping is free on orders over $150. Run, don't walk.

Springhills Fish

Springhills is a second-generation family fish farm in Grey County, Ontario, run by siblings Arlen and RJ Taylor. They've been raising rainbow trout and Arctic char in spring-fed water since 1992, and in 2023 they expanded to Manitoulin Island through a joint-equity partnership with Sheshegwaning First Nation, where they now raise coho salmon too. The family is working hard to show that land-based and net-pen aquaculture can be done responsibly in this province — and that Ontario can feed itself local fish.

Springhills is passionate about connecting people with their seafood and backing local fishers and farmers. Alongside their own trout, char and coho, they partner with independent Lake Erie fishers for wild-caught pickerel from an MSC-certified fishery, plus smoked fish, burgers and a rotating lineup of other Canadian catch.

What I love most about Springhills is the care that goes into the entire process. They raise the fish for its whole life cycle, harvest it humanely, and process, package and freeze it the same day — then deliver it themselves. The farm holds both Best Aquaculture Practices and Ocean Wise certifications, so when I open a Springhills package I know exactly where it came from and that it was produced responsibly.

Springhills doesn't ship nationally, but they deliver across most of Ontario, with free delivery on orders over $75 and no subscription required. You can also find them in Metro and Loblaws, or visit the farm store near Hanover, where you can walk the tanks and see trout at every stage from fingerling to breeder.

There's no shortage of sustainable seafood in this country. There was just a shortage of ways to get it to your kitchen. That's solved. Wild BC salmon from Vancouver. Lobster from Nova Scotia. Trout raised an hour from Toronto. Every one of these businesses is run by people who know exactly where their fish came from and are happy to tell you. Pick one. Place an order. Eat more fish.
